"yeah. it's the souls of the people who run the gyms of the minor league."

because it's dead and that's the joke. it's working as intended though, since it's a league project under kyle's name and if it's slow, that means he barely has to do anything to run it.

still, it's thanks to the minor league's office being located nearby that he got ahold of the rumor.

he had no idea mauville hills served as burial grounds as well which seems a bit odd but to each their own. he approaches the candle and kneels down beside it to further inspect it.[break][break]

"smells dead."[break][break]

and sure enough, the greavard pops out of the ground, tongue slapping side to side along with its tail.[break][break]

"this seems more like your type of pokemon, kyle."

"yup. that's my kind of pokemon."

the candle dog pokemon reminds him of litwick, especially from colors alone. while he doesn't have anything for a fire-type, if it even is one, he has one for ghost-types.

kyle turns to his pokemon and issues a move. "you're crunching that."

the mightyena's tail wags as he gets a go signal to act. it pounces on the smaller dog, fangs bared, and sinks his teeth on its shaggy fur. it tries to writhe out of the pokemon's grasp, finding an exit when kyle throws a pokeball at it.

a realization comes when he realizes he knows little of pokemon from paldea.

"shit! that means i have to study about paldean 'mons now!"

before the greavard disappears into a pokeball, matias takes out his kanto-issued pokedex and scans it. it has the latest patch loaded in so it has all the information he needs on paldea pokemon.[break][break]

"same here. that ghost dog was called a greavard. it has one evolution but i'll let it be a surprise."[break][break]

a surprise much like the dusclops that appears out of its NIGHT SHADE that looks like a stark contrast of aurora borealis in terms of color. matias turns right as his gengar's SHADOW BALL pounds it hard enough to still it into a pokeball.[break][break]

"i hope another paldea pokemon shows up."

maybe he should've patched his own pokedex before going out too right after they swarmed right into hoenn. he'd tell himself to do it later, hoping he doesn't get too lazy to do it by then.

"he's called dead dog for now until i get used to greavard."

he takes the pokeball with the dead dog in it. maybe one of his childhood dogs that died can turn into one. at that point, kyle's interest in paldean pokemon grows more than just how they work in a battle and the moves they learn.

as the pokeball is retrieved, he sees a mushroom pop out of the ground. kyle blinks, until it blinks back at him. of course it's a pokemon.

he whistles for his pokemon and then points at the morelull. there's no other verbal command, especially since the mightyena already knows all it needs to do. it scrambles as if figure skating before throwing an ice fang that encases the grass-type in frost as kyle captures it.

"how many do you need?" kyle asks matias.

"oh, shit. i better start catching up."

it's no secret that kyle has the least motivation out of the rest of the important people that fill the league roster. him lagging behind on anything is just expected, unless there's some kind of reward waiting for him at the end.

as far as he knows, there's none with catching paldean pokemon besides collecting white dogs.

"alright. you can take the next one, i guess. unless it's also a dog. how many paldean dogs are there?"

while he has no need for more pokemon, given that what he has already works, there's nothing wrong with wanting more.

a cleffa appears, which the mightyena quickly switches its attention to. it threatens to charge at the trainers, and the mightyena steps in to defend fast.

a quick thunder fang finds the small pokemon, managing to catch it with its electrified jaws. sparks surge, paralyzing the cleffa, where it lets out a soft cry. kyle finds the source of the sound before he throws a pokeball.

can't have a bunch of knocked out pokemon lying around after all.

"i think i've seen one of these on tv before."

the cyclizar was just running around on its legs. it's so cute.

"yeah, i'm gonna get it."

kyle whistles for his pokemon's attention and motions for the cyclizar. it's just running around though, and the mightyena's legs can't seem to keep up with it. frustration builds up, prompting kyle to remind his pokemon it has a ranged move.

"hyper beam."

a flash of white shoots from the mightyena's mouth to the cyclizar in a moment. the move hits squarely, stopping the running reptile on its tracks, falling on the ground as it writhes in pain.

kyle captures it with a pokeball afterwards.

"ah, that's my second one. seven more to go before i catch up."
